Looking for a great way to buy a car but save money? Consider buying used. With purchasing a used car, truck or SUV, however, there are several added factors to bear in mind when searching for the right vehicle (especially when it comes to history and reliability). Do Your Research
Before beginning your search for a car, stop and consider if there's a certain type of vehicle that would best suit your needs as a driver. By choosing what type of vehicle to look for, you'll have a more specific list of inspection items to check. You will also be able to find out what the common problems are for the models you're looking at.
Exterior Checks
Be sure to check the condition of the body. Walk around the vehicle so you can note any scratches, dent or rust, and look at the body panels. Everything should line up evenly, and the doors, hood and trunk should be able to open and close. Also inspect the tires. They should be the same brand and should have no cracks, bulges, scuffing or bad tread. Lastly, always check the lights, which should all work properly, have no cracks or damage, and they shouldn't show any signs of moisture.
Interior Checks
One of the first things you should note is if there are any odd odors. If the vehicle smells like mold or mildew, that could indicate a water leak or flood damage. Also note if the seats are worn or have any tears in the upholstery. Make sure the seats work properly and that you can move the driver's seat into a comfortable position for yourself. Always test out the controls and instruments to see if they're working correctly, and take a look at the roof for any signs of stains or water leaking through a sunroof or window.
Under the Hood
When checking under the hood, take a look at the belts, hoses, fluids, oil and transmission fluid. These should be at its proper level, and there should be no cracks, leaks or water. Look underneath the vehicle to check for any leaks.
The Test Drive
The test drive is probably one of the most critical parts of your inspection. When starting the engine, note how long it takes for the car to start and if there are any odd noises. Take the vehicle on a variety of roads so you can test it at all different speeds. Additionally, check if the transmission shifts smoothly and that the brakes offer good stopping power without pulling the vehicle to either side.
Paperwork and Mechanic's Inspection
Before you close the deal on your car, you need to get the vehicle identification number (VIN) and run a vehicle history report. Most dealers will provide a report on all of their used vehicles. A good idea is to have a trusted repair shop fully inspect the vehicle before you purchase it.
